Two individuals have been detained in Rome on suspicion of espionage, Italian outlets reported on Wednesday morning, APA reports citing TeleTrader.

According to reports, a frigate captain in the Italian navy was caught handing over documents to a Russian soldier, who was on duty at the Russian embassy in Rome, in exchange for money on Tuesday evening. The senior officer was arrested immediately, while the legal position of the Russian soldier is still undetermined due to his diplomatic status.

This was a joint operation involving the Italian Internal Information and Security Agency (AISI), Special Operations Group of the Carabinieri, and members of the defense ministry.
